The Berean Standard Bible (BSB) is now available in CodeInFaith apps. It is a modern English translation that reads naturally, stays close to the original Hebrew and Greek, and, most importantly for us, belongs to everyone.
Why We Waited for the Right English Bible
Back in 2023 we wrote about why Bible Clock uses the World English Bible. Most popular English translations require a license fee, and we didn’t want a paywall between anyone and Scripture. The World English Bible (WEB) is in the public domain, so it became our English version, and we said we had no plans to add another.
The BSB changed that. In April 2023 its translators dedicated the text to the public domain. In their own words, “This text of God’s Word has been dedicated to the public domain.” That gives the BSB the same freedom as the WEB: anyone can read, quote, print, and build with it without asking permission or paying a fee.
So adding it fits the rule we have followed from the start. We only ship Bible text that can be freely shared.
What the BSB Reads Like
The BSB uses everyday English without dropping the familiar wording many of us memorized. Here are a few verses side by side with the WEB:
| Verse | Berean Standard Bible | World English Bible |
|---|---|---|
| Psalm 23:1 | The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. | Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. |
| Proverbs 3:5 | Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; | Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. |
| Matthew 11:28 | Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. | ”Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. |
| John 3:16 | For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. | For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. |
A few differences stand out:
- “The LORD” instead of “Yahweh.” The WEB writes out God’s covenant name. The BSB follows the long English tradition of “the LORD,” which is how many people first learned Psalm 23.
- Capitalized pronouns for God. The BSB writes “He,” “Him,” and “Me” when they refer to God, which can make it easier to follow who is speaking.
- Clear, current wording. Phrases like “weary and burdened” read naturally out loud, which matters for a verse on your nightstand clock or one you are trying to memorize.
Both are faithful translations. The BSB simply gives English readers a second free choice, and many will find it feels closer to the Bible they grew up with.
Where You Can Use the BSB Today
The BSB is live now on our servers, so you don’t need to wait for an app update to pick it:
- Bible Clock: open Settings, choose the Bible version, and select Berean Standard Bible. Your clock verses will switch to the BSB.
- Verse Blitz: pick the BSB from the Bible version screen and practice memory verses in it.
- EveryDo: choose the BSB in Settings for your daily Bible reading and devotionals.
Our New Default English Bible
We are also making the BSB the default English Bible across our apps. If you already chose a version, nothing changes. The app keeps your choice. The default only applies to new English users who haven’t picked one yet.
Edenify and PrayTime don’t have a version picker, so they will start showing BSB verses for English in their next updates. Bible Clock will use the new default for new users starting with its next release as well.
The World English Bible isn’t going anywhere. It stays available, and you can switch back to it, or to the KJV or ASV, at any time.
Thank You to the BSB Translators
We are grateful to the Berean Bible Translation Committee and their partners for giving this translation to the church freely. You can learn more about the translation at BereanBible.com.
If you have a version you’d like us to consider next, send us your feedback. We’ll look at any translation that can be freely shared.
